Government Funding for Fertility in Prince Edward Island

Reviewed September 3, 2026. Prince Edward Island changed its fertility program on August 18, 2026. The current Fertility Treatment Funding Program provides eligible applicants with a lifetime maximum benefit of up to $20,000 per household. It is no longer income-tested.

What changed in August 2026

The new program replaces the former model that offered $5,000 to $10,000 per year according to household income for up to three terms. Older descriptions of those income tiers are no longer the current program rules. Previous and current participants in the former program must submit a new application to receive benefits under the new program.

Eligible support

The program covers eligible expenses associated with IVF and IUI, including associated prescribed medication and initial consultation fees. The $20,000 is a shared lifetime household maximum, not a fresh annual amount or a guarantee that every invoice will qualify.

Applicants must be permanent PEI residents and hold a valid PEI Health Card. Funding can be accessed as eligible expenses are incurred after approval and enrolment.

Transition rule for prior participants

Eligible expenses incurred on or after January 1, 2026 and before approval under the new program may be reimbursed only when they were incurred during an approved funding period under the former program and have not already been reimbursed. People outside that transition rule should not assume retroactive eligibility.

Access and travel

PEI does not have a full IVF treatment centre in the directory, so Islanders commonly travel to a clinic elsewhere in Canada. Treatment funding and travel costs are separate questions: the current program page lists treatment, consultation, and prescribed medication support but does not state that travel and accommodation are part of the new $20,000 benefit. Confirm travel arrangements before booking.

How to apply

1. Submit a new application to the Fertility Treatment Funding Program, including if you participated in the former program.
2. Wait for approval and enrolment before relying on the benefit, unless the published transition rule clearly applies.
3. Submit eligible expenses using the program's claim process and keep proof of any private-insurance reimbursement.
