IVF Waitlist in Ontario: What To Expect (2026)
By Fertility Finder Editorial Team · Published August 9, 2024 · 5 min read
Waiting for fertility treatments can feel like a frustrating process, especially with the pressure being put on women. “Time is of the essence” is a commonly heard phrase. If you’re navigating Ontario’s fertility landscape, you’re probably wondering just how long you’ll have to wait to get started. With around 25 IVF-funded clinics in Ontario for 2025/26 (including 6 newly added), one would think that you don’t have to wait for treatment.
In this article, we’ll dive into what you can expect when it comes to wait times for fertility treatments across clinics in Ontario. We’ll explore the factors that influence these wait times, offer some tips to potentially shorten them, and help you plan your next steps with a bit more confidence.
Wait Times for Funded IVF through Ontario Fertility Program
Note, the wait times listed on this page is based on our independent inquiry. We contacted these clinics and asked them specifically as of mid-2024. Wait times are always changing, so it’s best to reach out directly to the clinics, get a consultation, and get on the wait list asap!
The first question we always hear is “Is IVF covered by OHIP?” Not all fertility clinics in Ontario are eligible to offer funded IVF under the Ontario Fertility Program. Only participating clinics can provide subsidized IVF cycles to patients. These clinics are listed on this Page. The clinic listing pages on our website also identify whether a clinic participates.
If you are looking for a funded cycle, it’s important to confirm whether they participate in the Ontario Fertility Program, or else you may be wasting your time. If they don’t participate, you may need to pay out-of-pocket for treatments.
To cut to the chase, here is the Ontario IVF funding waitlist times for Ontario as of 2026 :

The Ontario government officially acknowledges that wait times exist and requires all funded clinics to report waitlist data to the Ministry of Health. Per ontario.ca: "There may be wait lists for government-covered fertility services at participating funded clinics... All funded clinics must regularly report to the Ministry of Health on how the program is doing, including wait list length and average patient wait times."
Wait Times for Private IVF
If you have the savings to opt for private paid IVF, there is more flexibility and potentially shorter wait times compared to the funded options. However, wait times can still vary significantly depending on the clinic’s capacity and demand.
For private payers, the most critical step in this process is the time it takes to schedule your first consultation with the clinic. This initial meeting sets the stage for your treatment plan, and gets you “in line” so to speak, so securing it as early as possible is key. By prioritizing and booking your first consultation quickly, you can potentially expedite the overall timeline and move forward with your IVF journey sooner. Based on our research, the intake wait time can vary anywhere from 1 week to 3 months depending on the clinic. Find a fertility clinic in Ontario where we list the approximate intake wait time.
Factors Affecting Wait Times
In short, wait times are typically correlated with demand, which the following factors can influence:
- Clinic popularity: Clinics with a strong reputation tend to have longer wait times due to higher demand.
- Geographical location: Clinics in dense urban centers like Toronto typically have longer wait times.
- Clinic staffing and resources: The number of specialists, embryologists, and support staff at a clinic directly impacts how many patients they can treat at any given time.
- Provincial funding cycles: Clinics have quotas and limits to the amount of provincial funding they receive. The timing of when provincial funding is released or renewed can also impact wait times.
Strategies to Reduce Wait Times
Whether these strategies work depends highly on the clinic, your flexibility (i.e. are you willing to travel?), and how persistent you are willing to be.
- Consider less busy clinics: Clinics in less populated areas or newer ones may have shorter wait times.
- Get a consultation as soon as possible: The earlier you get a consultation, the quicker you can get on the waitlist.
- Get consultations with multiple clinics: Get consultations with multiple clinics so you can spread out your options and increase your chances of securing a spot sooner rather than later.
- Explain to the clinic that you are flexible: Sometimes there will be cancellations and the opportunity for quicker treatment. Ensure that the clinic is aware that you are flexible and willing to accommodate last-minute appointments.
- Stay in regular contact: Be persistent and regularly check in with the clinic to express your continued interest.
What these wait times show us is that supply of fertility services does not meet demand – a reality the Ontario government has acknowledged by committing $150 million over two years to nearly triple the number of funded IVF cycles and help clear existing waitlists. Six new IVF clinics were added for 2025/26, which should gradually improve wait times – but demand remains high. Navigating this environment is challenging. For anyone that has gone through it, there is no doubt. We hope that this article provides some more visibility to help you plan your journey. Whether you’re considering funded options through the Ontario Fertility Program or looking into private paid IVF, being proactive is crucial. Start by researching clinics, getting on IVF waitlists, and scheduling that all-important first consultation. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us!
